ain't life strange - #acnotes
Imagine a box. A box in a building with a door. A box in a building with a door, lights, a fan and buttons. A box in a building with a door, lights, a fan, buttons and these buttons make this box move up and down, floor by floor. Now imagine, if you were asked to take this box often to move from one floor to another. Leave aside, the possibility of you being claustrophobic or not. Also, by now you might have guessed that I'm referring to a lift/elevator. So, in a day's life, a lift could be a boring object you might come across. So, to keep our narsisstic-selves engaged, some lifts have mirrors. Some cater to our distractive focus with transparent facades facing the interiors or exteriors of that building. And then there are some that have a voice welcoming you or some music on loop (Kenny G.?! Does that rung any bells).
Now imagine, this lift is a cliche. Well, a phrase or thought you might come across day in and day out. However, when you hear it set to tune or with an affirming voice that sounds like your conscience, you pay undivided attention and listen more keenly. Well, Julian Taylor's "Ain't life strange" is just that. A song that you think you could have written (but you didn't). A thought that might have occured to you (but you never said it out loud). A line that you think you might have heard somewhere (but you can't really recall where).
In other words, the song seems deceptively familiar like a string of cliches. However, the music, the voice and the production elevates the experience to a whole new level.
Now when you listen to it don't just let it play in the background like some elevator music. Listen keenly. This song is empathy, epiphany and experience that's expressed eloquently. And at the end of the song you'll be left with one too many thoughts. Amongst those, one for sure, would be "Ain't life strange".

The song "wonderful tonight" by Clapton plays day in and day out in my office's elevator! Even when is specifying that she looks wonderful that night, it feels good to listen to someone say "you look wonderful" 😄
Perfect "Elevator" music.
