an anthem for the burned out #acnotes
Paintbrushes in the Ground by Frizell D'souza (not a review)
A song like any other piece of art / creation takes a life of its own and lasts many lifetimes when the onus is carefully shouldered by its audience (listener/viewer/reader). And this sentiment echoes quite impeccably with ‘Paintbrushes in the Ground’. I've been listening to this track ever since it released and I was able to only scratch its surface until now. The first few times it brought forth this image of the sun and it embracing the earth at dawn. After a whole night of bleak darkness, warmth makes way to instill hope. A direct correlation could be, earth being the apartment, sun's rays suspended in thin air with motes of dust traversing to and fro, down the ramp that looks like paintbrushes in the ground. Well, if you thought this is where the song ended, I wish to share another perspective. Spare me a moment while I try to explain.
Something that's way too relevant in the present time and age - burnout. Now imagine if there was an anthem to console the burned out and affirm them that this is not the end, but a turn around the bend - then this song would be it. Give it another listen through this prism now. Better still, if you're a fan of Ghibli Studio and love their 1989 masterpiece Kiki's Delivery Service. May I request you to watch this movie again. Or, if you haven't yet, all the more better watch it first and return to this song. I'll wait (or wait till the end for the short clip).
To retrofit this song to a sequence in the movie (with utmost respect to the legends: Joe Hisaishi and Hayao Miyazaki), I would play this song in the background complemented by a montage — when Kiki's friend Ursula visits her and learns about Kiki's situation. And then Ursula suggests that Kiki go with her to her house in the woods. They spend time together and Kiki realizes what got her into that situation she is in, presently. And how she finds her way out. Trust me, I'm being obscure so that I don't spoil the song or the movie for you. That said, if you get to watch the movie and listen to the song as I've mentioned earlier — do kindly let me know.
For now, listen to ‘Paintbrushes in the Ground’. And see what image Frizell paints on you imagination’s canvas.

I haven't watched the film, not heard the song, but resonate deeply with the idea of burnout and finding an artistic reflection of this deeply human malaise. Your anthem of burnt-out reminded me of the I was playing “Movin out“ by Billy Joel on repeat as I tried to submit article after article in the middle of the pandemic, alone in my room, silently praying for the word count to reach and the day to get over. It got me through these hard times and made me feel seen. Thank you for sharing.
