Well, to each their own. This phrase holds true more aptly for a song. At each phase of one's life there's a song, more or less, like a person they've known, who visits time, time and again. Over time, its (the song)/their (the person) relevance changes. Some manage to travel along one's lifetime, while some fade away slowly only to be part of a vague memory that gets rekindled when heard in passing.
One such song for me is Dave Matthews Band's - Everyday. Or, how we used to call it the "the hug song" back then in the early 2000s. The lyrics is quite simple. When you listen to it you'll perhaps even realise it's a hat-tip/homage to The Beatles' - "All you need is love". Back then, this song was a go-to to begin the day and when I wanted some cheering up being an adult back in the day. Adulting is still tough and it's a pursuit. A never-ending one, to say the least.
From being a ringtone to call back tone on my phone to being shared umpteen number of times on mail (yes, we didn't have an option to share songs on phone yet, then slowly came bluetooth). This song was not just a conversation starter but it was a song you would share with someone who may or may need a hug. Imagine if this ๐ค emoji was a song, then "Everyday" would be that song.
Some trivia about this song - it was initially titled "When the world ends" and then it was eventually changed after the 9/11 incident. From Wikipedia: "September 21, 2001, Dave Matthews played an acoustic version of the song as part of the America: A Tribute to Heroes concert, performed in remembrance of the victims of the September 11 attacks.
That said, what stood out back then when I first listened to it in 2000s - my early 20s, is how you wish you could be a solution or of some help to someone as you move on from dawn to dusk. A brilliant metaphor that echoed this sentiment was "the hug guy" who starts his day waking up like any other person, goes on about making other's day, with a simple hug.
*Spoiler alert*
There's an instance where he gets snubbed, yet he keeps at it till the end of the day till he's back in bed.
*end of spoiler*
What startles me now is how that feeling isn't that prevalent anymore. That drive to touch lives in some way. Maybe the cards that life dealt brought about a change. The transition is evident from offering love to seeking love. Maybe, it's also the realisation that we don't have the solution or all the answers to life's problems. Ironically, when you yourself are living with so many questions that do not have answers, how will you help someone else, someone distant with their answer. But again, you try. Try with whatever might you're left with. Try, to pick love today, once again. Maybe, you live the answer someone is seeking?
Now, as you begin, go on about whatever hour of the day - perhaps "All you need is love". Or, you could choose love to pay it forward - everyday.
I'm keen to know and discuss whatever your choice is (if you wish to). Or, go on and listen to the song. [๐ค]
