Impress, do not impose. - #acnotes
"A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down" is a famous lyric from a song in Mary Poppins. And that spoonful of sugar or honey is ARR's music when it comes to Hindi music. Perhaps, one way to look at how someone might like a language is how it has been offered to them - with an intent to impress or to impose. Frankly, I mean no disrespect to any language. Hindi was always that distant 3rd language in school, where one needs to just pass to make it through. Besides Doordarshan's only channel DD1 in my early childhood - ARR gets to take credit for making me like the language.
More so, when you don't know what the song means, but the music holds your hand and takes you through, blindfolded. And you know where it's leading you. You know you're not just going to touch the destination, but you're thrilled at every step of the journey. To draw a parallel, it's like reading a book with some tough or unfamiliar words in your vocab. Yet, you know what the author is trying to convey, purely by the effort put into stringing that word with the rest that it's so coherent. Now one such song to elucidate the above-mentioned is this song from the movie ThakShak. A movie I never watched, yet the album was popular amongst my friends circle.
More specifically, this song serenaded by Roop Kumar Rathod. The strings especially in the background. Needless to say, the composition altogether tells the tale of this smitten protagonist thinking of someone faraway, while they're engulfed by a silent night, stroked by a dreamlike/phantasmic breeze and a lonely heart that is seeking the other's company (perhaps). Then a string of metaphors which I am not going to try guessing the meaning. It's almost like trying to be a pseudo- masterchef and guess the ingredients of a well made dish. At this point, I would rather indulge. And while at it, share a spoonful with you. With or without sugar, or something else, I'll let you choose whatever goes best for you.
