Retelling of an age-old Tale - Debussy's Claire de lune
Regardless of who tells the story and what story they share, I rarely am wide-eyed or in awe the way I was when my Grandmother told me a story. It could've been a simple story of how the hare landed on the moon, but I would listen to it like it was the first time every single time she would narrate that story. Or, for that matter the blind men and the elephant. Or, Jonah and the whale. You know how the story would begin and how it would end, however you're eager to listen. Perhaps, this was how our craving for a comfort watch/listen/food may have begun. It's a repeat or a rerun that affirms you with a familiarity. No surprises. No jump scares. No twist in the tale. You get what you've already seen or experienced. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Well, this rendition of Claire de lune by Mario Joao Pires, weaves a similar impact for me. Pardon me for calling her old, if that's what you thought since I mentioned about my grandma earlier, but that wasn't my intention. However, those first few seconds, 00:03 to 00:07 gives you that gentle brush on your head, like no other. How she doesn't land, but skims like a pebble across a placid pond, triggering ripples. And then you've reclined at the next note. Gradually, she ushers you into a good place. Then before you know the story is over, you're yearning for more. Yet, you're at peace.
In other words, this is an age-old fairy tale, retold by a grey and graceful storyteller.
