welcome to wherever you are #acnotes
Always, Living on a prayer, You give love a bad name, Keep the faith, Have a Nice Day and of course the wildly popular It's my life are some of the songs you perhaps remember when the name Jon Bon Jovi is mentioned. For me, besides these songs, what tops my recall is this movie - Row your boat. Won't spoil it for you, if you get to watch it, please do. That apart, this song that was part of their 2005 album 'Have a Nice Day' - Welcome to wherever you are. A song that's nothing like what the band has written or produced, a song that's easily passable if you aren't keenly listening, a filler for the silence at cafes or pubs. Music for the ears of tea cups and beer mugs. More so, one of the songs that doesn't even have a guitar solo to play the air guitar along.
However, this is a song that became that THE song I listened to repeatedly and more than ever, shared it with those I've connected with. You know that phase where there's deluge of questions and not even a single answer would amount to drop of dew would surface -- this song came to me at one such point. A career of my choice, a path I thought I'd paved myself, and a life on my own terms, is what I had assumed it was. Rightly said, assumption is the mother of all "____________". Feel free to fill in. Like they say, existential crisis, or better still, existential dread could strike you when you least expect it. Like a hiccup, maybe, but it may not leave with a tall glass of cold water or by holding your breath. This feeling lingers and how. At one such time, I came across these lines "you're caught between who you are and who you want to be". And after a few lines, the title of the song catches up to assure you "welcome to wherever you are". And then follows this affirmation "Welcome, you gotta believe... Right here, right now, you're exactly where you're supposed to be. Be who you want to be, be who you are. Everyone's a hero. Everyone's a star." Indeed, it's true. This is when that state of sonder dawned. And till date, whenever I feel I'm lost or I've hit a dead end, I go back to this song. Sometimes, it works, sometimes it merely nudges after several listens. That said, it still makes me acknowledge the distance I've travelled. Reflect on the milestones crossed. More importantly, acknowledge my effort in making it this far. Be ever grateful for the Grace from above. To conclude, moving ahead or staying still, is a choice you make. But before that give yourself some credit that you've lived to see this moment, while many who started with you may have never made it this far. Perhaps, there are those who you think have made it way past you. Then, pause to catch a breath and wish them godspeed. Remember, for that brief period of 3:47 sec, be grateful that "Right here, right now, you're exactly where you're supposed to be."
